IRS form 2848

Fill Form 2848 for every client, signed by them and by you

Form 2848, Power of Attorney and Declaration of Representative, authorizes an eligible representative, such as an attorney, CPA or enrolled agent, to represent a taxpayer before the IRS for the tax matters and periods listed. The taxpayer signs Part I and each representative signs the declaration in Part II. BoltPDF fills it from the client's record and collects both signatures in order.

Form
Form 2848: Power of Attorney and Declaration of Representative
Issued by
Internal Revenue Service (United States)
Who uses it
Attorneys, CPAs, enrolled agents and other eligible representatives, once for each client they represent before the IRS.

What’s on Form 2848

Part I, Power of Attorney, signed by the taxpayer:

Part II, Declaration of Representative, signed by each representative: their designation (attorney, CPA, enrolled agent and so on), licensing jurisdiction, license or enrollment number, signature and date.

Fill Part I from the client’s record

Upload Form 2848 once and BoltPDF maps its fields to standard names. The client’s name, address and SSN or EIN fill from their record, the same values that fill their Form 8821 and W-9. Your representative details can be a column in your CSV or saved on each record. For a batch, import a CSV with one row per client.

Both signatures, in order

A client request can name up to three co-signers. Your client checks the form, signs Part I, and then each representative gets their own link to sign Part II on that same signed PDF. BoltPDF checks the PDF hasn’t changed between signers, adds a certificate of who signed and when, and sends everyone the finished copy.

Onboard a client in one go

Make a packet with Form 2848, Form 8821 and your engagement letter, and they’re filled together from the client’s record as one PDF. Send the packet as one request and your client checks and signs both forms in one sitting.

Questions about Form 2848

Who can be a representative on Form 2848?

The eligible individuals listed in Part II, such as attorneys, CPAs and enrolled agents, plus a few others, such as certain officers, full-time employees and family members, in limited cases. Each representative states their designation and signs the declaration.

Can my client and I both sign Form 2848 online?

In BoltPDF, yes. Send a client request with you as a co-signer: your client signs Part I first, then you get your own link and sign Part II on the same PDF. Everyone gets the finished copy. The IRS accepts electronically signed Forms 2848 through its online submission tool; check its current rules for how you submit.

Do I need Form 8821 too?

Not for the same matters: a power of attorney already lets you receive the client's information. Some firms still use Form 8821 for staff or matters that don't need representation.
